Why Organic is better: The danger caused by bio-magnification of pesiticides

Bio-magnification of toxic pesticides is a very real danger to health!

The compounding effect that is created by the natural food chain means that we human beings, being at the top of that food chain, are the most affected by toxic chemicals sprayed on to plants and pastures. This is why the Organic movement is soooo very important.

Watch this short video for an explanation of bio-magnification and the potential for damage to our health that it creates. This little bit of information can help us to really understand why the organic movement is so important.

Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera Benefits and Uses For Skin and Hair

Aloe Vera is one of just a few herbs that is so widely known today that most people  have at least heard of it, even if they haven’t used it themselves. Aloe Vera is commonly used both as an ingredient in products, and on it’s own, for its nutritional content, its amazing ability to heal both internally and externally, along with the potential of this herb to enhance the natural beauty of skin and hair.

Aloe Vera has been used by humans for thousands of years with the earliest recorded use being found on clay tablets dating back to 1750 BC from Mesopotamia describing medicinal applications of the plant.

There is also evidence from Egypt of the use of Aloe Vera. It is thought that Nefertiti and Cleopatra, the Egyptian queens, may have used the plant as part of their beauty treatments and although this is disputed by some, Aloe Vera was certainly used by the Egyptians in other ways, with drawings of the plant having been found on the walls of their temples that date back to 550 BC.

Aloe Vera Benefits

Internal use of Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera  is commonly used internally for its healing potential and nutritional content. Its use has been shown in studies to be of great benefit for those suffering from cancer and AIDs: reducing symptoms, boosting the immune system and improving quality of life, while at the same time potentially improving prognosis and extending life span. It has also be shown to reduce cholesterol (LDL) and triglyceride levels and lowers blood sugar levels in diabetics.

Aloe Vera is commonly used internally for stomach ulcers, constipation, leaky gut, IBS, and other chronic illnesses and is known for its soothing, healing, nutritional qualities and general health giving properties.

Aloe Vera for skin and hair

Used internally, Aloe Vera can be beneficial for the skin by increasing general health and assisting with many chronic health conditions, but when it comes to the skin, topical use is most common.

Topical application of Aloe Vera has been shown in studies to be of benefit for psoriasis, herpes and wound healing. Many people around the world put it to use for its cooling, soothing, and healing effects and discover its value when used for burns, sunburn, exzema, acne, aging skin, sunspots and other skin conditions.

Used in hair care products, Aloe Vera helps to keep hair shiny and healthy, while at the same time helping to keep the scalp in good condition. For those with common scalp problems such as dandruff, psoriasis or exzema, quality hair care products that use beneficial amounts of pure Aloe Vera can help to resolve these problems.

Miessence products use raw, organic Aloe Vera

When you look at the ingredients in most hair care products and most skin care products, the main ingredient in those bottles (ie the first ingredient on the list of ingredients) is water. That means that you’re not only paying for (in most cases) a bottle of harsh chemicals that have no place on your skin or hair, but a bottle of product that is primarily water.

Apart from being cheap and having no beneficial effect to the user, the water used in many of these products is plain old tap water which can be full of chlorine and possibly fluoride. Some products may even be made with water that is contaminated with chemical or pharmaceutical residues depending on where the product is manufactured and the purity of the water supply being used.

The Miessence range of products however, are based on pure, organic, raw Aloe Vera.

The use of raw, organic Aloe Vera means that the Aloe gel, along with all the other beautiful ingredients, has not been damaged by heat ensuring they are used in their natural raw state with all their beneficial enzymes and natural, health giving properties intact.

When you look at the ingredients on the labels of Miessence products you will see that almost all of them have Aloe Vera as their main ingredient – not water – and this makes them very special, giving them amazing anti aging, healing and soothing properties not found in other products.

Aloe Vera has much to offer us and what better way to use it than blended with other magnificent ingredients that help to keep you looking younger, healthier and more radiant? Check out the Miessence range here and try some for yourself.

Why Miessence

Why I Chose Miessence

Why Miessence? For me the answer to that question began almost twenty years ago…

Many years ago, before we had access to all this freely available information on the internet, I remember wondering about the ingredients in hair care and skin care products.

You see due to my own health problems, my interest in natural remedies, healthy eating and ways to create better health naturally was growing and along with it, a passion for natural health and all that that entails was blooming.

At the time there was very little readily available information about the ingredients used in personal care products. But as I became more aware of the issues surrounding many of the foods that many of us eat,  it began to dawn on me that if businesses weren’t doing the right thing by their customers when it came to the  foods they were producing, then what hope did we have of manufacturers having any kind of conscience when it came to personal care products?

It turns out my instincts were correct!

So I began making my own skin care products about fifteen years ago using beautiful, health giving, natural ingredients such as aloe vera, plant extracts, plant butters, oils and essential oils.  I even sold my products at local markets for a while.

At the time I also used the only brand of shampoo I could find that contained no sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS). I didn’t know about the other harmful ingredients commonly used in hair products, but realise now that that particular brand probably did contain some of those ingredients that my much older and wiser self wouldn’t use today.  But that’s how I managed what I felt instinctively was a potential health risk for about three or four years.

Then I was introduced to a company that made products without known or suspected harmful ingredients.  The company was a network marketing company and their products were both effective and much safer than any other brands that I had come across. So I joined the company and from that point on my family were 100% users. We happily used only this brand of products for thirteen years and know that the use of those products did dramatically reduce our exposure to many commonly used, harmful chemicals during that time.

However one thing bothered me during this time and it was the fact that this company used some synthetic, albeit supposedly safe ingredients. Even though there were world leading experts, toxicologists and scientists who said that these ingredients were safe, in the back of my mind there was always a niggling doubt.

The doubt was there because my belief is that nature has provided us with everything we need to be healthy and my instincts tell me not to trust science. I’m not a fan of science or scientists as most science is based on theory even though it is made out to be fact.

So for me, in my own mind, I had decided that I would stay with this company because their products were definitely more effective and safer than any others I had found.  I would continue to use their products unless I found something better, and until such time as I found a company that made products that were more compatible with my beliefs about nature and science, and that were more natural and safer for me and for our fragile environment.

That’s where Miessence comes in.

I first came across Miessence not long after the company was created just over ten years ago and I watched it with interest. I wondered if this company was for real and if their products were truly organic. I wondered if they would survive and thrive or whether they might collapse within a few years, leaving their representatives and product users stranded as most new network marketing companies do.

I have to admit that I was immediately drawn to their philosophy and their natural, organic products, but I didn’t do anything about it. Over the last ten years  every now and then, something would trigger a thought about them and I’d check out their website to see if they were still there and if their product range had grown. I’d have a look at their ingredients and wonder….

Meanwhile I was building a small team in my chosen network marketing company, secure in the knowledge that my company was a survivor at over twenty years old and financially sound. I also found my loyalty to this company growing as it became a part of my life and I attended events and got to know more people in the business.

However at the same time I watched Miessence not only survive, but thrive and grow over its first ten years.  I’d look at their ingredient lists online and I’d pick up their products whenever I saw them in health shops, curious, but unwilling to break my loyalty or use other products until I knew that Miessence was here for good.

You see, one thing I’d learned from being in a network marketing business, was that most network marketing companies fail within their first five years in business and still more within ten years. But, if a network marketing company makes its first decade then it’s a survivor!

So as Miessence celebrated it’s tenth anniversary, fate caused me to stumble across that fact and their tenth birthday offer to join for free. I made the decision to join and finally, after many years of wonderingtry some of their products.

The first products I bought were a mixture of samples: shampoo, conditioner, body wash, body creme, moisturiser and foundation. I also bought some toothpaste and mouthwash to try.

I sampled all these products and I fell in love!

I fell in love with the fragrances, the flavours and the feel of these products. I fell in love with them because I’ve been madly, head over heals in love for many years with many of the glorious, natural ingredients that Miessence uses. These are the same ingredients that I used all those years ago in my own products (but better quality, raw and organic) and some of those are the health giving, beautifully fragrant and powerful essential oils that I massaged my clients with for years in my business as a massage therapist.

The fragrances  and ‘naturalness’ of these products had me hooked.

The other deciding factor for me was the almost instant, positive result I had with a Miessence moisturiser.

When I joined Miessence I had a ‘thing’ growing on my nose. It was right on the end of my nose, slightly to one side. It had been there for about eighteen months and looked kind of like a blister.  All of a sudden, over a few months prior to joining Miessence, it had started to grow which had me worried and I was trying to decide what to do about it.

When I received my first order from Miessence I began using the sample packet of Rejuvenating Moisturiser and I fell in love with it’s feel and it’s fragrance immediately. I never even considered that it might make a difference to the ‘thing’ on my nose.

But it did!

Within a few days that ‘thing’ was gone. Completely gone! I couldn’t believe it and that is what really sold me on the Miessence products.

What I’ve learned since joining is that Miessence products are 100% natural, raw products that use organic ingredients certified to food standards. That means you could eat them if you wanted to and for me that makes them something that I can believe in 100%.

I believe that God and/or nature put everything on this planet that we need to live healthy lives. This planet can provide everything we need to have beautiful skin, healthy hair, awesome teeth and healthy bodies without synthetic, man made chemicals and Miessence have created their products in the best way possible from those God given ingredients. These are products that are not only effective and safe for people and the environment, but that are full of the vitality and life force that comes from raw, undamaged, beautiful organic natural ingredients.

Miessence, their products and all that this company stands for is aligned with my paradigm and it feels amazing to finally be part of a company that I truly believe in.

So that’s my story and my answer to the question. But that’s not all. There are other awesome things about Miessence and their products that I’ll be sharing in further posts on this site so make sure you don’t miss out. Join my mailing list and Like Organic Newz on Facebook and that way you won’t miss anything!

Super Green Superfoods: AFA, Spirulina and Chlorella

Deep green organic superfood Super Green Superfoods: AFA, Spirulina and ChlorellaWhat do Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (AFA), Spirulina and Chlorella all have in common? They’re all green, they’re all super and they’re all foods. That makes them all green superfoods!

All three of these amazingly green foods provide superb nutrition and all three have different, but demonstrated health benefits for those who consume them.

What are they?  AFA and Spirulina are both cyanobacteria, while Chlorella is a eukaryotic. That makes them all species of algae. Cyanobacteria are among the oldest life forms on the planet, estimated to have been around for over 3.5 billion years and they were the first organism to achieve photosynthesis. They are all classed as algae because they grow under water and need sunlight to survive.

There are probably more species of microalgae than we might imagine and the role they play in maintaining life on earth is truly astounding.  It’s amazing to discover that there are literally thousands of species of algae on the planet; over forty thousand species are known, and some of those have been consumed by humans for thousands of years.

Algae are nutritious and good for you!

These blue-green algae  or cyanobacteria  (AFA and Spirulina) as well as Chlorella (the eukaryotic) are some of the most nutritional foods available on the planet; each of them containing large amounts of chlorophyll, which has proven benefits to human health. These benefits probably exist because it is only one atom away from hemoglobin – our oxygen carrying red blood cells.

Aphanizomenon flos-aquae (AFA)  is probably the least well known of these three superfoods. This microalgae grows in fresh water in Lake Klamuth and contains between 60% and 75% protein as well as high amounts of B vitamins. It has also been shown in studies to be a reliable source of vitamin B12; good news for vegetarians and vegans.

Spirulina is as chock full of protein as AFA, containing between 55% and 77% protein and is considered to be a complete protein. It is also high in B vitamins including vitamin B12, as well as the minerals that so much of our food today lacks such as calcium, magnesium and selenium.

Chlorella provides slightly less protein, containing around 45%, but once again it is high in B vitamins, including B12, high in minerals and other nutrients that are vital for good health. Chlorella is also one of the most widely used supplements in Japan with an estimated 10 million Japanese taking it regularly.

All three of these amazing green algae are foods in their own right, containing valuable nutrition and providing support and healing to the body. Each of them will help to remove toxins from the body while also helping to keep the body more alkaline and the chlorophyll they contain makes them a powerful cancer preventative. They also each have their own specific benefits that makes taking the whole three together a smart choice:

  • AFA has proven beneficial effects on stem cells, assisting with slowing or halting the aging process and keeping the aging body younger and healthier.
  • Chlorella has been shown to remove heavy metals from the body including mercury. Important in a contaminated world.
  • Spirulina has been shown to increase fat burning during exercise and to help to boost the immune system in older adults

For those who are new to these green superfoods, it is recommended to start off slowly as they will begin to detoxify the body and may cause digestive upset initially if too much is taken. Begin with a quarter (or less if necessary) of the recommended dose and work up to the full daily amount as your body allows.

Which brand do I take?

I personally take Miessence Supergreen Superfood blend (click here to view). It is an awesome blend of organic AFA, Spirulina and Chlorella, along with a good variety of organic herbs and grasses. Whichever blend you decide to purchase, always ensure that the algae is organic as non-organic varieties can be contaminated with heavy metals and other toxins.

Toxic chemicals list: Commonly used personal care and cleaning ingredients

More and more people today are beginning to gain some inkling of the dangers that everyday products may pose to their health. Many consumers are beginning to express concern about toxic skin care ingredients such as propylene glycol, DEA and mineral oil as well as other synthetic and potentially harmful ingredients found in personal care products.

This toxic chemicals list contains commonly used ingredients in personal care and cleaning products. As you will see, many of them are potentially harmful and toxic to the body, however this doesn’t stop manufacturers from using them with blatant disregard for the health of their customers.

Aerosols-All aerosol products contain dangerous chemicals and propellants that penetrate the lungs and the bloodstream. These days we are being exposed to them everywhere with automatic spray units in peoples homes spraying for insects and air fresheners in public buildings and toilets.

Acetone – Linked to cancer, skin and eye irritant and neurotoxin

Alcohol – Linked to cancer (in mouthwash there is a strong link to oral cancers), skin and eye irritant

Alpha-hydroxy acids – Skin and eye irritant

Aluminium – Linked to cancer, skin and eye irritant and neurotoxin. Aluminium is one of the leading causes of skin irritation in antiperspirants and has caused concern with regard to breast cancer. There is also a link to Alzheimers disease.

Benzophenones – Skin and eye irritant

BHA (Butylated hydroxyanisole) – Linked to cancer, skin and eye irritant, accumulates in organs, can cause asthma

BHT – Linked to cancer, skin and eye irritant, accumulates in organs, can cause asthma, neurotoxin

Collagen – Skin and eye irritant

Coal Tar Dyes – Linked to cancer, skin and eye irritant

DEA (Diethanolamine) – Linked to cancer, skin and eye irritant, accumulates in organs, can cause asthma. DEA is the most common chemical used in the cosmetic and personal care business.  In November 1997 the National Toxicology Program (USA) was still reporting that DEA was a carcinogen that is readily absorbed, is an irritant to skin and eyes and can cause impaired vision and accumulates in organs such as the brain where it induces chronic toxic effects.

Dibenzoylmethanes – Skin and eye irritant

Ether – Skin and eye irritant, neurotoxin

Fluoride – Linked to cancer, accumulates in organs. There is enough fluoride in one tube of toothpaste to kill a child. Fluoride causes fluorisis of the teeth and of the bones, meaning they discolour and weaken to a chalky condition.  It is also linked to bone cancer in particular and damages the thyroid.

Formaldehyde – Linked to cancer, skin and eye irritant, can cause asthma.  It also can be a hidden carcinogen in 7 other ingredients and released as they break down.

Hydroxyanisole – Linked to cancer, skin and eye irritant

Isopropanol – Linked to cancer, skin and eye irritant, neurotoxin.  Can cause renal (kidney) failure and stays on the hair long after rinsing off.

Lanolin – Linked to cancer, skin and eye irritant, can cause asthma.  Lanolin is a natural oil from sheep, but is often highly contaminated with hidden carcinogens such as DDT, Dieldrin, Endrin and other organochlorine pesticides from sheep dips.

MEA – Linked to cancer, skin and eye irritant

Methylene chloride – Linked to cancer, skin and eye irritant, can cause asthma

Mineral oil – Linked to cancer, skin and eye irritant.  It is often a carrier of carcinogenic compounds.  It blocks the pores and suffocates the skin.  Baby oil is 100% made from this with some artificial fragrance thrown in. It is a disgusting product marketed as being good for our babies.  I fortunately could not afford to use this when my children were babies.  Would you want to use it on your precious baby now that you know?

PABA – Linked to cancer, skin and eye irritant

PEG - Linked to cancer, skin and eye irritant, can cause asthma

Phenol – Linked to cancer, skin and eye irritant

Phenylenediamine – Linked to cancer, skin and eye irritant, accumulates in organs, neurotoxin

Propylene Glycol – Linked to cancer, skin and eye irritant, accumulates in organs, neurotoxin.  This is an extremely common ingredient. It is even used on pharmaceutical medicines and some processed foods!

Quaternium – Linked to cancer, skin and eye irritant

Saccharin – Linked to cancer.

SLS/SLES – Linked to cancer, skin and eye irritant, accumulates in organs.  This is an extremely commonly used chemical. It is derived from coconut, but is NOT natural as some products claim.  SLS makes the skin more permeable which means that the other harmful chemicals that you are exposed to at the same time, are more readily absorbed through the skin.  SLES is the ethoxylated version of SLS.  It is often used in baby products (amongst others) as it is not as harsh on the the skin, however it may cause nitrates and dioxin to form by reacting with other ingredients creating an even more dangerous cocktail of chemicals.  SLS in toothpastes is a common cause of recurrent mouth ulcers.

Talc – Linked to cancer. is associated with an increase in ovarian cancer when used in the genital area, it is dangerous when inhaled and blocks the pores in the skin when used in
makeup.

Toluene – LInked to cancer, skin and eye irritant, can cause asthma, neurotoxin

Triclosan – Linked to cancer, skin and eye irritant, accumulates in organs and is a mutagen containing ‘hidden’ carcinogenic dioxins.

TEA – Linked to cancer, skin and eye irritant and very similar effects to DEA.

The good news is that you can avoid these toxic ingredients by switching brands and using 100% natural, certified organic products.

How to avoid toxic chemicals in the home

poison How to avoid toxic chemicals in the homeHow do I avoid toxic chemicals in my home? What products do I need to look at and change?

Ingredients that are best avoided are in most brands of the following products – (click on the products to see the types of potentially harmful ingredients likely to be found in them and then click on the ingredient for information on the effects they have on our bodies).

Many cleaning products contain obviously harmful ingredients. They carry warning labels and so are a more obvious hazard than our shampoo and toothpaste. They can be extremely toxic, can cause immediate symptoms when used and are often very harmful to the environment.

Many cleaning products that claim to be more environmentally friendly simply are not. I find that after many years of not using these products or any products with harsh chemicals and fragrances that even walking through the cleaning product aisle in the supermarket is enough to make my nose start running and is a very unpleasant experience that I avoid when possible.

Colour cosmetics &  nail products may contain coal tar dyes, isopropanol, acetone, collagen, DEA, ether, formaldahyde, MEA, mineral oil, PEG, phenol, quaternium, talc, toluene, triclosan, TEA,bentonite, kaolin and more.

Skin care products often contain propylene glycol, DEA, TEA, 2-bromo2-nitropropane1.3diol (Bronopol or BNPD), BHA, coal tar, formaldehyde,Glycerine, alpha hydroxy acids, lanolin, mineral oil, SLS, SLES, PEG and more.

Soaps, shower gels, shampoos, conditioners, bubblebath, and antibacterial gels usually contain SLS, SLES, DEA, TEA, MEA, quaternium, PEG, and fragrances. Bubblebaths have been found to strip away the mucous lining of the genitourinary tract and regularly cause urinary tract infections especially in young girls. Soaps may contain tallow and lye as well as fragrances.

Airfresheners generally contain artificial fragrances that will contribute to many health problems and if aerosol, then as with all aerosol products they will contain propellents which are harmful.

Hairstyling products may contain DEA, BHA, TEA, alcohols, methylene chloride, toluene, fluorocarbons and more.

Baby products generally contain SLS, SLES, propylene glycol, mineral oil, fragrances and all the same ingredients as their adult versions. These companies don’t make allowances for little tots – we’re all treated equally – except for the fact that these exposures have much more of an impact on little ones as their skin to blood/tissue ratio is much higher than an adult which means that when these chemicals are absorbed through their skin, they have a much higher concentration in their blood and tissues than an adult would if exposed to the same amount. I remember many years ago, wondering how young children and babies could get cancer. It just didn’t seem right to me – now I know why and it’s incredibly sad.

Deodorants and antiperspirants generally contain aluminium along with fragrances, propylene glycol and alcohol.

Talc is associated with an increase in ovarian cancer when used in the genital area, it is dangerous when inhaled and blocks the pores in the skin when used in makeup. When sold as Talc it also generally contains fragrances.

Toothpaste and mouthwash generally contain SLS, SLES, saccharin, fluoride, alcohol, artificial flavours and colours and more. Perfumes and fragrances are often mixtures of synthetic chemicals that can cause a variety of  symptoms and health issues.

As you see, almost everything you use in the way of mainstream, conventional products on your body and in your home for cleaning and deodorising are potentially adding to the toxic load in your body.

Is it any wonder that cancer is so common?

It’s not all doom and gloom however – there is good news! There are safe options available and we can take more responsibility for ourselves, our health and our environment.

Once you’re aware of the problem, isn’t it common sense to change to safer products for your own sake, the sake of your family and the planet? Change your spending habits and start buying from companies that are doing the right thing – not those that are taking you for a ride, ripping you off with cheap, nasty toxic ingredients and leading you down the garden path of ill health.

Night Grass

Toxic Chemicals in Everyday Products

At a time when we know that many synthetic chemicals can cause or contribute to cancer and one in every two people are destined to get some form of cancer in their lives, we find ourselves living in a world where we are literally surrounded by these chemicals and come into contact with them constantly. New chemicals are being created and unleashed on an unsuspecting population regularly; generally without testing or legitimate  consideration for human safety. Many of these chemicals can have serious ramifications for not only human beings and animals, but for our entire planet. The issues surrounding synthetic chemicals and their obvious dangers are generally ignored by governing bodies because unless something has an immediate and dramatic effect on the health of those using it, proving cause and effect is difficult. Possibly the most sinister effect that many of these chemicals have on the body is that they mimic estrogen, resulting in an increase in hormone related cancers such as breast and prostate cancer and causing all sorts of hormonal havoc for both men and women. These hormone mimicking chemicals are referred to as xenoestrogens and they not only increase cancer risk, but also contribute to low sperm counts, infertility, early onset puberty as well as  feminisation and breast development in males.  Genital abnormalities are also becoming more common in newborn males due to exposures to xenoestrogens by the mother during the time that the fetus is developing.

How are we exposed to these toxic chemicals?

In this modern world we’re exposed to these toxic, synthetic chemicals in many ways, but our most common  AND most preventable exposures may be in our own homes. Building materials and furnishings We naturally like to think of our home as a safe haven from the world and by rights it should be. Our home is our castle and it’s meant to be comfortable and safe, but unfortunately today that’s often not the case. Most people are unknowingly living in a toxic soup of chemicals leaching from the glues, paints and other materials used to build their home as well as others produced by outgassing from furnishings, carpets and fabrics.  Studies show that air quality inside of most homes is more polluted than that in the most polluted cities of the world, and if the air quality outside were comparable to that inside of most homes, we wouldn’t be able to see more than a kilometre down the road! Simple strategies such as keeping indoor plants in the home and opening windows and doors to allow fresh air in can help to improve air quality inside the home. Our food supply  Most of the produce grown for human consumption is sprayed with a variety of chemicals such as  insecticides, herbicides and fungicides. When we buy fresh fruits and vegetables we have no way of knowing how much residue from these chemicals remains on the produce. The same can be said for the ingredients in processed foods – canned, frozen or otherwise – which may not only have residue from agricultural chemicals in them, but almost always have added chemicals added in the form of preservatives, colours, emulsifiers, stabilisers etc. Unless we eat only un-sprayed, whole, organic foods, we have no idea what quantities of these chemicals we’re consuming each day, or what effects they are having in our body. To reduce the amount of synthetic chemicals we consume in our meals, we can choose to eat more organic food. Growing our own food is the best option because we know exactly how it’s been grown, but this option isn’t available for everybody. Buying organic food is a good second best.  It’s also important to reduce or eliminate processed foods from the diet. Cleaning products Most people buy cleaning products without much thought for the chemicals they might contain or the impact that using them might have on their health and the health of their family. What makes the situation worse is that many don’t only use one cleaning product. Many people mix potentially toxic substances on cleaning cloths, surfaces and in the air within the home during cleaning. Those using the cleaning products are not only absorbing this mixture of potentially harmful chemicals via their skin, but they are also inhaling them via their lungs, as are other family members or people sharing the same building. The good news is that once we’re aware of the dangers that most cleaning products pose to our health, we have the choice to use safer options.  The fact is that the home can be cleaned using very few cleaning products and can be done without putting yourself or your family at risk. Personal Care Products Surprisingly it’s not the agricultural chemicals or the cleaning products that pose the greatest risk for most of us; our greatest exposure comes from the products we use every day to keep ourselves looking and smelling good. That’s right, it’s our personal care products that are potentially the greatest source of harmful and toxic chemicals that impact our health negatively, causing or contributing to many of the common health issues many of us suffer with. These are both common and uncommon health issues such as:

  • Cancer
  • PMS/Menopause symptoms
  • Excema and other skin disorders
  • Asthma
  • Allergies
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Infertility
  • and many more…

Examples of personal care products that are likely to contain harmful chemicals include:

  • Hair care products such as shampoos, conditioners and hairsprays
  • Body washes and soaps
  • Skin care products such as moisturisers and sunblocks
  • Deodorants and antiperspirants
  • Cosmetics

Every single day most of us use personal care products one after another, layer upon layer, with women being the greatest users. Almost all mainstream personal care products contain potentially harmful, synthetic chemicals. Many of them are made from a cocktail of these chemicals; many having been shown to be harmful. Even the synthetic ingredients that are generally regarded as relatively safe, may not be when mixed with other ingredients. Testing to ascertain safety has simply not been done. Consider your own morning routine. Most of us get out of bed then:

  • Use a toothpaste that contains harmful chemicals such as fluoride, sodium lauryl (or laureth) sulphate (SLS or SLES), saccharin, and artificial flavours and colours then…
  • Follow up with a mouth wash containing high amounts of alcohol and often more artificial flavours and colours. (I would like to point out here that under our tongue is one of the fastest ways to absorb things into our bloodstream!) then…
  • Jjump in the shower where the hot water opens our pores up making our skin more receptive to whatever is put on it. We use a shower gel containing more SLS or SLES, artificial fragrances, maybe some DEA, PEG or TEA (or all of them), and Propylene Glycol and possibly others. We shampoo and condition our hair with more of the same and possibly even more harmful chemicals. We might shave with some also then…
  • We get out of the shower, we put on some deodorant or antiperspirant containing aluminium, more propylene glycol, triclosan, some artificial fragrance and if it’s an aerosol, then of course there are the propellants then…
  • If you are female (and for many males these days) there are then hair styling products containing any or all of the following – DEA, BHA, TEA, alcohols, methylene chloride, and toluene among others then…
  • On go the skin care products, cosmetics and perfume with yet another chemical cocktail that probably includes many of the above chemicals, plus perhaps some coal tar, formaldehyde, glycerine, lanolin, mineral oil, petrolatum to name a few likely ingredients.

So, you should now be realising that this is a HUGE exposure to these chemicals. What is worse is that it is daily exposure (with some applications repeated several times a day), that is applied layer upon layer upon layer – particularly in women. It’s estimated that many women absorb over 2.5 kilos of harmful chemicals per year from cosmetics and personal care products. Their men are also being affected via the close contact that partners usually have, with men consuming lipstick when kissing their wives or girlfriends and being exposed to synthetic fragrances in perfumes etc. Children too are affected by what mum wears through contact and of course while developing in the uterus. The blood from umbilical cords has been shown to commonly contain over 200 harmful chemicals – common sense tells us that this isn’t a good start for any child! Each product used contains a mixture of synthetic chemicals that are potentially harmful due not only to their individual properties, but by their combination with other synthetic ingredients. Then when those products are used with other products containing even more synthetic ingredients, the chemical cocktail becomes more and more complex as you absorb the chemicals from the different products into your blood which is then pumped around your body, contaminating your organs, your brain and your body systems.

What can we do?

The most effective strategy to reduce exposure to harmful chemicals for most of us  is to simply stop buying and using products that contain synthetic chemicals and switch instead to natural, organic products. We can reduce our exposure to these hormone disrupting, cancer causing, cheap and dangerous chemicals that a large majority of manufacturers use to make their products by simply not using them any more. This not only helps to keep you healthy, but it also sends a loud message to manufacturers when they realise that customers want safe products. Unfortunately many companies are only interested in profits – the health of their customers isn’t a priority. They understand that there are questions surrounding their product ingredients, but the ingredients are cheap and appear to do the job so they continue to use them and make excuses for doing so. Some of these companies go so far as to defend their dangerous ingredients just like the tobacco companies did until they were forced to tell the truth, while others hide them, including only the ‘nice’ ingredients on the label (if any), describing them as ‘active ingredients’ and hiding the rest. An example of this is a very well known cosmetic company who have an eye cream on which the label lists only sweet almond oil as an ingredient. This cream is white, thick and has a perfume – common sense would tell anyone who actually thinks about it that there is more in there than almond oil! I had a friend who was a distributor for these products and a quick look at  the sales person’s manual which included the confidential ingredient lists confirmed my suspicions; this product contained propylene glycol, artificial fragrance and lots of other nasty stuff. This type of misinformation is VERY common and referred to as ‘green washing’. Tip: If you’re looking for safe products READ THE INGREDIENT LABELS! If a company doesn’t include it’s product ingredients on it’s website, then it’s probably not to be trusted…. As consumers we need to educate ourselves and find companies that are doing the right thing. We each have the power to make educated decisions and vote with our dollars. If we don’t then companies will continue to make toxic products, cancer rates will continue to soar and we, our families, our children, and our planet will suffer for our ignorance and apathy.

Something else to consider is that these chemicals that we are using to clean our homes, wash our hair and brush our teeth are going down the drain and into our water supply. They are affecting our wildlife – turning our boy fish, birds and frogs into girls and the scary thing is that if we end up with too many girl fish, birds and frogs,  these species (and others) will disappear! But if we each play our part in taking care of the planet, then the planet will take care of itself.
